This book presents papers by scholars representing various disciplines, especially archaeology, art history and history from the United States, India, Pakistan, Europe and Australia and they discuss how attitude toward the subcontinent's visual past shaped a distinctive aesthetic, together with a distinctive historical consciousness. The papers in this volume assess evidence from South Asia' visual past to probe undestandings and even the constructions of the past from pre-history times through to the twentieth century.
