The Center for Art & Archeology
One of two scholarly research centers supported by the American Institute for Indian Studies, the Center for Art & Archaeology (CA&A) is devoted to documenting India’s rich visual traditions.
Scholars from all over the world can find materials to support research on South Asian cultural history, including a wide range of easily accessible, high quality photographs of architecture, sculptures, paintings and museum collections.
In addition to its photo archive, CA&A supports a photo laboratory, a library, a digitization section and a drawing section. These resources have positioned the Center for Art & Archaeology as the nodal point for research scholars visiting India from the United States, particularly those visiting on an AIIS fellowship. Some projects, such as the highly acclaimed, comprehensive Encyclopaedia of Indian Temple Architecture, are so large they can be done only by teams commanding the vast research resources of the Center. It is increasingly important as a resource for art historians worldwide who incorporate Indian art into their teaching.
