AIIS stands as a pillar for students and scholars working on India in the U.S. academy. With our community’s generous contributions, we have succeeded, despite the unique challenges of the current moment, to continue to support our flagship language and fellowship programs while adding programs that explore new ideas and possibilities.

AIIS has been pivotal in the lives and careers of almost all scholars studying India in the US today. Whether they participated in a language program, were supported by a fellowship, were mentored in the Dissertation to Book workshop, or found a helping hand at the Delhi office, AIIS has been able to fulfill its mission and commitment to support scholars and scholarship.

Help support the mission of AIIS and give to a program that is meaningful to you, or to the unrestricted annual fund. AIIS and generations of future scholars of India are grateful for your support. — Sumathi Ramaswamy, AIIS President

From our community of scholars

I’ve chosen to support AIIS in whatever ways that I can since it has been so foundational in my own research and provided a safety net even when I was in India without AIIS financial support. Just as close to my heart, AIIS has been crucial in supporting language study and dissertation research of many creative graduate students whom I’ve had the privilege to work with, particularly those from India who were not eligible to apply for funding sources limited to American citizens.

Joyce Flueckiger

I [gave] a gift to the AIIS in the hope that somewhere in the future, non-citizen students admitted into graduate programs in the US for the study of India would have a fair chance at research in India. It [is] a letter of faith in a future yet unborn.

Indrani Chatterjee

My debt to the Institute is immense, so I have done what I can to pay it forward. Many of you know that for two decades I served as the Secretary for the Institute’s Board of Trustees, helping the Board make the difficult and crucial decisions to continue to support the field. When my own finances reached a point where I could do so, I started donating to the Institute on an annual basis, in particular to support junior fellowships to enable the next generation of scholars to conduct PhD dissertation research in India.

The Grand Trunk Road Project

For six decades, since 1965, the Center for Art and Archaeology (CA&A) of AIIS has been dedicated to documenting India’s extraordinary built and artistic heritage. One of our recent initiatives focuses on the 16th–17th century fortified sarais or rest houses along the Grand Trunk Road—once the world’s busiest trade route and today a corridor of layered histories. Working closely with local communities across Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh, we have recorded oral histories, interviews, photographs, and 3D architectural models that capture both the monuments and the lived experiences shaped around them.

Now available on the Virtual Museum of Images and Sounds, this archive is considered the largest public online resource on the Grand Trunk Road. It also preserves poignant settlement stories of migrants who crossed newly drawn borders in 1947 and rebuilt their lives within these historic structures.

ARCHIVES AND RESEARCH CENTER FOR ETHNOMUSICOLOGY

ARCE works to preserve India’s rich heritage of music, performance and oral traditions through its projects of documentation and research, and an audio-visual archive which preserves and provides access to 25,000 hours of recordings, not only to the interested public but through proactive outreach to communities. Online access to curated materials is available through platforms such as Smithsonian Folkways and the Virtual Museum of Images and Sounds.

The Archives and Research Center for Ethnomuisicology (ARCE) was founded by the American Institute of Indian Studies in 1982. It continues its mandate of repatriation of Indian music and oral traditions held in archives outside India. This year we received the collection of the French ethnomusicologist Genevieve Dournon.

The regular activities consist of developing the audio visual archive with voluntarily deposited collections by individuals and institutions who do not have the means to preserve them. Digitisation of these legacy collections remains a major challenge. In the past decade ARCE has received three grants that assisted with digitisation.  This year ARCE was the recipient of a grant from the Modern Endangered Archives Program for the project “Voices from the margins: oral traditions of communities from Western India”

ARCE also conducts fieldwork projects from time to time which focus on the preservation of traditional music and performance in partnership with communities. Explore the collections at the Virtual Museum of Images and Sounds.
