AIIS operates two world-renowned research centers—the Center for Art and Archeology (CAA) and the Archives and Research Centers for Ethnomusicology (ARCE).

The principal research resources at the Center for Art and Archaeology (CAA) are its outstanding library, perhaps the finest library on art and archaeology in India, and a photographic archive of South Asian artistic and archaeological materials. Aside from the strength of its holdings, the particular value of this library is enhanced by the accessibility of its open-stacks, a system almost unknown in India, and its proximity to the photographic archive, which enables scholars to work with photographs and printed materials simultaneously.

The Archives and Research Center for Ethnomusicology (ARCE) houses some 25,000 hours of sound recordings which have been deposited by scholars and musicians from all over the world, as well as a top-quality reference library. The resources of the Institute’s centers are available to AIIS fellows and all scholars.

Both centers are devoted to preserving the cultural heritage of India. Each hosts conferences and workshops for scholars, artists and professionals.
